During Erik ten Hag’s first campaign in charge, Casemiro and Eriksen were often relied upon in the middle of the park.

In such a short spell, they've played 54 games together, and alongside Bruno Fernandes, they went on an excellent run of form that saw them go unbeaten as a trio until April 2023.

However, last season, the duo struggled to be anywhere near as influential, with the Dane starting just 12 times and boasting an average of 53 minutes per game in the Premier League.

The former Real Madrid star’s involvement was much more frequent, featuring 24 times from the off in the league, with an injury preventing that from being higher.

Yet, during United’s best performance of the entire campaign, against Manchester City in the FA Cup final, neither Eriksen nor Casemiro played a single minute, which indicates the future of the Red Devils’ midfield will be better off without the experienced duo.

The main issue for both Casemiro and Eriksen is their huge decline in physicality and athleticism, which are absolutely key for any midfielder in the Premier League,

It would be an incredibly expensive deal to get over the line, but based on his performances this season and the similarities between him and Van Persie, it is likely one worth pursuing.

Ultimately, while missing Šeško is far from ideal, the fact that Gimenez has outperformed him this season and shares some similarities with Van Persie should leave fans feeling encouraged that Arteta and Edu can still bring in an effective striker this summer.

It’s been the type of run that sparks serious questions about the January transfer window and the need for reinforcements – particularly on the defensive front. As things stand, Liverpool have just two senior centre-backs available, but have been linked with moves for the likes of Castello Lukeba and, of course, Marc Guehi.

Liverpool open talks to sign Marc Guehi

According to TeamTalk, Liverpool have now opened talks to sign Guehi this week in an attempt to get their deal back on track and land their No.1 defensive target ahead of Real Madrid.

The Reds came within hours of signing the Crystal Palace star in the summer, only for the Eagles to pull the plug on the deal at the death. Now, they’re attempting to jump ahead of the chasing pack by making their move as early as the January transfer window.

Those at Anfield are reportedly willing to offer a deal worth around £30m next month, whilst others wait in line to secure Guehi’s signature as a free agent in the summer.

Not even Slot could hide Liverpool’s admiration for Guehi when they missed out on his signature in the summer, telling reporters: “It would be ridiculous if I were to deny we were close to signing him.

“That is so out in the open. These things happen in football. We would have liked to have signed him, of course. If we feel we can strengthen the team, we never hesitate to do so.”

Both players left quarantine on Monday night, 11 days after they arrived in Dhaka following the IPL’s deferment.Initially they were supposed to be in quarantine for 14 days, in accordance with the directive by the country’s health authorities for travellers from India, which is currently suffering a massive second wave of Covid-19 infections.The BCB’s chief executive Nizamuddin Chowdhury said that there was no “special considerations” being made for the two, given that they will remain in a bio-bubble all through the Sri Lanka series, which begins on May 23. Training for the series began today.”The directive that they must practise while staying in a bio-bubble environment still stands. They are practicing while within the bio-bubble. This is not a special consideration. They have shifted from their hotel quarantine to the team’s bio-bubble,” Chowdhury said, adding that the pair had tested negative three times before joining the bubble.The IPL sent the two players to Dhaka on a chartered flight, since air travel between the two countries has been suspended since April 14. A hard lockdown was enforced in Bangladesh since that day, following a spike in Covid-19 cases from mid-March. With India also experiencing a severe second wave, the border between the two countries was also shut from late April. Land borders were reopened earlier this month, with those crossing over into Bangladesh needing to undergo institutional quarantine for 14 days.
