Man Utd send club official to Portugal as Ratcliffe readies huge offer

da pinnacle: Manchester United and Sir Jim Ratcliffe reportedly have a huge bid ready to sign one star this summer.

Man Utd’s transfer plans under Ratcliffe

da 888: The Red Devils and Ratcliffe may well be planning for the upcoming summer transfer window, which will be their first to make their mark at Old Trafford.

Whether or not Erik ten Hag is still in charge remains to be seen, but a number of new faces may well be required, with United struggling for large parts of the current campaign.

Man Utd want 4-2-3-1 manager who plays “sublime football” to oust Ten Hag

The Red Devils have concrete interest in him.

ByHenry Jackson Apr 3, 2024

Ratcliffe has already addressed his likely transfer policy, hinting that the club may not throw money around. When asked about the possibility of signing either Jude Bellingham or Kylian Mbappe, he said:

“He’s a great footballer (Bellingham) but it’s not where our focus is. The solution isn’t spending a lot of money on a couple of great players. They’ve done that, if you look at the last 10 years. The first thing we need to do is get the right people in the right boxes, managing and organising the club. We must make sure we get recruitment right, such a vital part of running a football club is getting recruitment right, finding new players.”

On the idea of signing Mbappe, who is on course to join Real Madrid from Paris Saint-Germain over the summer, Ratcliffe then added:

“I’d rather find the next Mbappe, rather than spend a fortune to buy success. It’s not that clever to buy Mbappe, anybody could figure that one out.”

However, one player who has been heavily linked with a big-money move to Old Trafford is Benfica midfielder Joao Neves. Recent reports suggested that Ratcliffe was set to approve a record-breaking offer of more than £100m to sign the 19-year-old, and there has now been a new development.

Man Utd bid ready for Joao Neves

According to reports from Portugal relayed by Sport Witness, Man Utd have more than €100m ready to convince the Eagles to sell Neves, who is seen as a priority target in Manchester.

In fact, it could be a club record move over €105m (£90m), with the story adding that there was due to be a Red Devils official in attendance on Tuesday night for Benfica’s clash with Sporting CP.

Benfica midfielder Joao Neves

Something which could also sweeten a deal for Neves is a permanent exit for United defender Alvaro Carreras, who is on loan at Benfica. There is thought to be a transfer on the cards between United and the Eagles in the summer for Carreras.

United would have liked what they saw from Neves on Tuesday evening, with the youngster playing the full 90 minutes and recording a 7.5/10 SofaScore match rating.

Benfica drew 2-2 with their rivals but were knocked out 4-3 on aggregate in the Taca de Portugal semi-final. Neves’ days with Benfica could well be numbered, and by the look of things, a bid from Manchester could arrive sooner rather than later.

Veteran Australian administrator Ian McDonald dies

He was the ACB’s first media manager and a longtime manager of the national side

Ian McDonald, the Australian Cricket Board’s first media manager and also longtime manager of the national team, has died aged 88 on the Gold Coast after a long illness.McDonald led the internal investigation that confirmed Mark Waugh and Shane Warne had been paid for their exchange of information with “John the bookie” during the 1994-95 season. Waugh (A$10,000) and Warne (A$8,000) were privately fined by the ACB immediately before travelling to the West Indies in 1995, and while McDonald drafted a press release to announce the decision, the story was kept in-house by the ACB and did not reach the public eye until December 1998, well after his departure.A long and eventful career as a journalist and sports editor for publications including , and the , and then as media manager for the VFL, set up McDonald to be recruited to the ACB by then chief executive David Richards in August 1983.The governing body was still coming to terms with the demands of the new era heralded by the “peace treaty” with Kerry Packer after World Series Cricket and needed a better idea of public relations. At the time, McDonald described his role as bringing a “more human public image” to a “faceless and mysterious body”. McDonald would remain at the ACB until 1997, an instantly recognisable figure with his stocky build, moustache and brown-framed glasses.Over that time, McDonald’s duties were many and varied, as the go-between for a cricket board and national team that struggled amid the many ructions of the early 1980s before taking on a more robust and successful form under the leadership of Allan Border and Bob Simpson on the cricket field and Richards, cricket manager Graham Halbish and chairman Malcolm Gray in the latter years of the decade.McDonald was a confidante and advisor for all these leaders, presiding over events such as Kim Hughes’ tear-filled resignation as captain in 1984, some 80 home Test matches, the World Cup co-hosted with New Zealand in 1992 and ultimately Australia’s rise to the summit of the game by defeating the West Indies in the Caribbean in 1995. McDonald’s duel role as media and team manager gave him a unique perspective on a time when support staff were few and players and administrators worked closely together on limited budgets. In January 1992, when the selectors chose to drop Border’s longtime lieutenant Geoff Marsh from the final Test of a series against India, causing the captain to refuse to walk onto the field for day five of the fourth match at Adelaide Oval, McDonald fielded calls from the press box about his absence. His immortal reply when asked why Border was absent, “he’s got the s***s”, momentarily had the fourth estate concluding that the captain was battling gastro. As a media manager, McDonald was pivotal to creating a system of national media accreditation to allow access to all Australian venues during the international summer. He recruited and mentored Patrick Keane, a former Australian Associated Press journalist, as Australian team media manager, before he went on to a long and influential career with the AFL.

Boehly simply must ditch Chelsea’s "worst signing" this summer

da bwin: Chelsea's erratic dealings in the transfer window under Todd Boehly in recent times were always going to be a risky and bold strategy to return to the fight for a Premier League title.

da roleta: Whilst there's no denying players such as Cole Palmer and Moises Caicedo were good investments despite their respective £40m and £115m moves to Stamford Bridge, many of the new additions have failed to make any positive impact during their time at the club.

One that springs to mind is £89m signing Mykhailo Mudryk, who's only managed to find the net on six occasions during his 53 games for the Blues since his move last January.

He's yet to find his feet in the Premier League, often lacking confidence and that final product – something you'd expect in a player who costs an obscene amount of money like the Ukrainian.

However, despite his failings at Stamford Bridge, the club also wasted a lot of money on one other talent, with the player currently spending the campaign away from Mauricio Pochettino's side.

    Kepa Arrizabalaga's stats at Chelsea

After joining the club for a reported £71.6m from Athletic Bilbao during the summer of 2018, Kepa Arrizabalaga, who cost a world-record sum for a goalkeeper, had high expectations of being the Blues' long-term replacement for Thibaut Courtois after the Belgian had departed for Real Madrid.

However, the move would be a disaster, with the Spaniard looking shaky despite his big-money move to Stamford Bridge.

He would appear 36 times in his first Premier League campaign for the club, keeping 14 clean sheets – a respectable tally, but one that would rapidly decline during his time in London.

The former Bilbao man also caused controversy during the Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, refusing to be substituted by boss Maurizio Sarri ahead of the penalty shootout – with Kepa unable to prevent the Blues from falling to a defeat.

However, the signing of Edouard Mendy saw the Spaniard drop to second-choice for the 2020/21 season, only featuring 14 times throughout the campaign, including a substitute appearance against Chelsea in the Carabao Cup final.

He was brought on at the end of extra time for the penalty shootout, failing to save any, before missing the final spot kick, handing Jürgen Klopp's side the trophy.

In total, he's made 163 appearances for the club since his arrival in 2018, before joining Real Madrid on loan last summer for the 2023/24 campaign – where he's made 18 appearances to date.

    Kepa Arrizabalaga's wage at Chelsea

During his time at the club, the 29-year-old has pocketed £38.8m in wages, as per Salary Sport, taking the club's total spend on the goalkeeper to £110.4m in just under six years – an extortionate amount given his lack of impact at Stamford Bridge.

Kepa, who's been described as potentially the club's "worst signing" by talkSPORT's Rory Jennings, simply hasn't looked up to scratch throughout his time in west London.

    Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga

With his deal at the club set to expire next summer, Boehly and co need to shift him off the books as soon as possible – reports earlier this season suggesting that the Blues are ready to take a £50m loss on the player, with a £21m fee suggested.

The huge figure for his wages is a real concern, especially given the club's recent losses. Although a potential sale of Kepa wouldn't immediately solve the club's woes, it would go a long way to ensure Pochettino's side stay within the permitted year losses of FFP.

Chelsea set to strike gold by selling "special" star for 31,478% profit

He cost them just £94k and could now leave Stamford Bridge for a big fee.

Australia rue 'missed opportunity' as South Africa prove killer instincts at death

Mantra of “confidence in skills” helped seamers hold nerve to close out improbable victory, says Ngidi

While South Africans celebrate their double success in T20 cricket on a super Sunday in which both the men’s and women’s teams won crucial matches, Australia are not making any attempt to hide their disappointment that victory could have been theirs.Their men’s team lost a T20 for the first time since November 2018, ending a nine-match unbeaten run and thus squandered the chance to seal the series against South Africa in a tense tussle.Chasing 159, Australia were fell 12 runs short, after putting themselves in a position from which assistant coach Andrew McDonald felt they could have won.ALSO READ: Smart Stats – Ngidi the most impactful bowler”We got the game into a situation, where even though [Tabraiz Shamsi] bowled four overs for 17, we could have won it,” he said. “The players will feel it is a missed opportunity to win a series away from home which is always a huge accomplishment.”Shamsi was the most economical bowler in the match, bowling a tight middle-overs spell to keep the required rate rising, but was bowled out by the 14th over of Australia’s innings. Then, they needed 50 runs off the 36 balls to win but Anrich Nortje, Lungi Ngidi and Kagiso Rabada denied them.Ngidi’s third over, which went for 11 runs but included the wicket of Alex Carey, and Rabada’s last two overs, which cost a combined 10 runs and saw Matthew Wade dismissed, did the trick for South Africa and helped restore some of their confidence after they suffered their biggest T20I defeat less than 48 hours before. Ngidi admitted it has been tough for the home attack, especially after they also failed to defend a total against England immediately before this series and coach Mark Boucher said their skills were not up to scratch.”It’s been a very difficult build-up for us. There’s been a lot of situations where we have been tested at the death,” Ngidi said. “The chats have been to have confidence in the skills that we have. We have done it before so it’s to go out there and have trust in our skills. We saw in our innings, we had gotten off to a flier and they also bowled very well at the death. We saw that if we can hit our straps with our death bowling it’s going to be a tight game and we saw in the end, it was.”Rabada was significantly improved from his effort at the Wanderers on Friday, where he took 0 for 45 in three overs, and Ngidi recovered from conceding 36 runs in his first three overs, which included 12 in his first three legitimate deliveries, to giving away only five in his final one. The trust he spoke about shone through as he kept himself in the fight until the end.Lungi Ngidi celebrates the dismissal of Alex Carey•Associated Press

“You’ve got 24 balls to bowl and the first over doesn’t determine whether you have won or lost the game,” he said. “There were a few unfortunate boundaries that I went for that could have helped if those hadn’t gone but I knew there is still an opportunity to win the game. I just wanted to try and take as many wickets as I could.”Ngidi probably knows that he can’t claim all the credit for his last wicket, which was the result of superb fielding from former captain Faf du Plessis. Stationed at long-on, du Plessis parried a Mitchell Marsh shot that was destined for six back into the playing area for David Miller to complete the catch in the third instance of a ball being saved from sailing over the boundary in the match. The other two efforts were from Steve Smith, who saved sixes when South Africa were batting and McDonald had nothing but praise for both teams’ showing in the field.”The game gets better every day and fielding becomes a spectacle. It was fantastic. The cutting of angles and the speed, the athleticism of the modern-day player is outstanding and they never cease to amaze,” McDonald said. “They do practise it and they put themselves in those scenarios in training. It’s no fluke they are able to execute that in my match. These guys have got creative minds and they’ve added in different shots over time and fielding is no different.”But for Wednesday’s decider, Australia’s focus will shift to their middle order, where they are still experimenting with No. 4 and No. 5 as they prepare for the T20 World Cup. “We’ve locked in Finch and Warner at the top and Steve Smith, I dare say he won’t be moving but we are flexible on No. 4 and 5,” McDonald said.”Exposure to those situations more often grows experience and with experience comes the ability to execute and today we didn’t quite get that right. We saw at the Wanderers they had some work to do and they were able to do it batting first. Batting second on a tiring wicket is a different situation so they will be no doubt better for that experience.”

Jon Holland offers path to victory after cutting off Cameron Green

Will Pucovski was finally dismissed – for 202 – then Shaun Marsh scored another hundred

Cameron Green appeared set to deliver a strong riposte to Will Pucovski’s second double century in as many Sheffield Shield innings for Victoria, before spinner Jon Holland intervened with a spell that demonstrated that assistance was in fact available from the pitch at Karen Rolton Oval, just not so much for the West Australian all-seam attack.WA’s captain Shaun Marsh, with his third century of the season, was left in the company of the nightwatchman Matthew Kelly after Holland’s twin strike in the final session, finding appreciable turn alongside admirable economy in the sort of display he had been unable to deliver first up against South Australia at Glenelg.Victoria’s skipper Peter Handscomb had set the game up nicely with an enterprising declaration before lunch, showing that he had perhaps learned from a couple of recent failures to defeat South Australia outright on flat surfaces when his team had run up enormous first innings tallies that had nonetheless eaten into the time available to bowl the opposition out twice.Handscomb fell short of his own century, having witnessed Pucovski make it as far as 202 before flicking a catch to midwicket, giving him a Shield average of 457 from his two innings so far – numbers of the sort the Australian team coach Justin Langer had demanded in order to force a change to a settled Test match batting line-up. He was the first batsman to make back-to-back double hundreds in the Shield since Dene Hills in 1997-98.The short session before lunch proved highly fruitful for the Victorians, as Scott Boland delivered a beauty from around the wicket to find the edge of a pushing Sam Whiteman, which Handscomb snapped up expertly in the slips. On the stroke of the interval, Cameron Bancroft was pinned lbw in front of all three stumps by the young paceman Mitch Perry, despite his apparent annoyance at the decision.Marsh and Green then accumulated soundly against the seamers, the latter commendably upright and straight as he has been in so many innings of his young career, and with their stand worth 141 inside the final hour, the Warriors looked set to be well established for day three. However, Holland had dropped onto a tantalising length that prevented free scoring while also teasing the outside edge of the bat, and after several of his left-arm orthodox deliveries spun nicely away from Green, the 21-year-old was eventually beaten by the perfect ball, pitching in line with middle and leg before turning enough to sail to slip off the edge.Hilton Cartwright, once considered a potential international allrounder in the manner Green is currently being feted, soon followed in more spectacular manner, playing back to a ball that popped and turned sharply, flying more or less straight up in the air off the shoulder of the bat for Handscomb to claim his third catch out of four. These wickets will have made a mark as much by their manner as by the changes to the scoreboard, after WA had named an all-pace bowling unit in their XI and then granted Victoria first batting use of a surface now clearly friendly to spin.
