Moeen shows that home is where the hurt is

Moeen Ali returned to his first home at Edgbaston with runs and wickets to take Worcestershire into the semi-finals and bring heartache for his former county

ScorecardWhen Moeen Ali left Warwickshire a dozen or so years ago, the club made a point of confirming that he would always be made welcome on his return. But they probably didn’t mean like this. For here Moeen, with three wickets and a century of the highest class, guaranteed his ‘new’ side,Worcestershire, a home semi-final and at the same time sentenced Warwickshire, their local rivals, to the exit.In what became, effectively, a knock-out match – Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire both leapfrogged Warwickshire with their victories – Moeenhelped Worcestershire withstand a blistering opening spell from Olly Stone on the way to his first List A century in domestic cricket forfive years. The previous one was also against Warwickshire at Edgbaston. There’s no place like home.In truth, a wonderful game – full of moments of youthful brilliance – deserved better than the moment that sealed it: Keith Barker skiddingon a dewy outfield and allowing a single to become a boundary. That tied the scores and meant there was no way Warwickshire couldprogress. Worcestershire’s home semi-final was guaranteed moments later when Ed Barnard, admirably calm amid the mounting drama, forced one through the off side field for four.It is often said there is no pace in county cricket. But here Warwickshire – even without the injured Chris Woakes – fielded twoyoung men capable of generating 90 mph. Both Stone – who was timed at 91.4 mph at one stage – and Henry Brookes – who was timed at 89.6 – hurried and harried the Worcestershire batsmen and shared seven wickets between them. To see an international batsman, CallumFerguson, beaten for pace by Stone was heartening. To see 18-year-old Brookes – who beat Brett D’Oliveira for pace – lose little bycomparison will have had selectors taking note. To see Brookes relishing the responsibility and rising to the moment was to see aspecial talent start to blossom. Warwickshire – and probably England – may well have unearthed a gem here.Only Moeen appeared to enjoy the extra pace. Upon a surface on which Worcestershire’s attack had relied on cutters, Warwickshire’s somewhat unsophisticated approach – if fast doesn’t work then bowl faster – played into his hands a bit. Moeen equalled his own record (Joe Leach shares it) for Worcestershire’s fastest List A half-century: a 25-ball affair that included three sixes; the best of them a drive overlong-on off Stone. He hasn’t been in much form since returning from the IPL. His last three innings had produced 10 runs and two ducks. But here, presented with a relatively big occasion – there was a time such a game would have generated a crowd in excess of 10,000 – and a chance to put one over on Worcestershire rich neighbours, he looked imperious. With nobody else in the top five able to make 20, Moeen was grateful for the arrival of Ben Cox. The pair added 95 in 12 overs, with Moeennegating the threat posed by Jeetan Patel and punishing Warwickshire for their absence of a fifth bowler. Aaron Thomason, who has a sidestrain, was missed. It’s probably churlish to find fault in such an innings. But, by the time Moeen mistimed a rare slower ball to mid-off – DominicSibley making a tricky catch appear straightforward – Worcestershire needed 105 from 24.4 overs; a rate only a fraction over four-an-over.The hard work had been done. It seemed an unnecessary stroke. The same might have been said for Cox. Having just seen Ross Whiteley superbly caught at short third-man, Cox’s well-paced innings endedwhen he attempted to pull one too full for the stroke and played on. It left Worcestershire, with seven wickets down, chasing 19 more runs.Sam Hain has had an excellent tournament•Getty Images

That set-up a nerve wracking finale. With Patel forced to go all-in in the search for wickets – Worcestershire were miles ahead of therun-rate and had more than 10 overs to score those 19 runs – Brookes, Stone and Barker bowled out their allocation. Time and again, ballbeat bat but, though Brookes yorked Leach, Dillon Pennington – on first-team debut – somehow survived for 23-balls in helping Barnardadd nine runs. It doesn’t sound much, does it? But every one had to be chiselled from granite and, by the time Barker trapped him leg before, just four were required for the tie.Earlier Warwickshire’s batsmen appeared to struggle for fluency on a pitch that may have been a little slower than they wished. DespiteWorcestershire being without Josh Tongue, who was ruled out with a foot injury, and soon losing their skipper, Leach, to a back injury – he was required to come back out and field for a few overs before George Rhodes arrived from a second XI match in Stourbridge to lendsupport – Warwickshire were unable to progress as they would have like against a disciplined attack. It took a stand of 133 in 25 overs between Tim Ambrose and Will Rhodes to drag Warwickshire to respectability. The pair helped their sideplunder 103 in the final 10 overs of their innings – and 66 from the final five – as Worcestershire started to wilt in the field. Twice balls that should have cost a single – at most – were allowed through legs and to the boundary, while there were four wides in the final two overs; one of them going down the legside for four. For a while it seemed Warwickshire’s superior fielding may prove the difference. But if the highlight was Patel’s direct hit from mid-off to run-out Daryl Mithcell, it was all forgotten when Barker’s slip let through the ball at a crucial moment. As an aside, it will never be Trott’s fault again. The result confirmed that this was the final List A match of his career. The game has, in many ways, moved on in recent years but Trott’s record – the 23 List A centuries, the ODI average of 51.25 – remain exceptional. But for a few minutes of madness at this ground in the Champions Trophy final of 2013, he would have been part of a side that won England’s first global List A trophy. It wasn’t to be but, for a while, England went to No. 1 in the world and he won many games – and a few trophies – for club and country.Worcestershire need not worry about that. For a second year in succession, they have earned themselves a home semi-final. To have done it with a largely home-grown squad – and Moeen didn’t have to come too far, either – provides an excellent example to many richer rivals.

Not Isak or Gordon: Newcastle could have an £83m star in the making

da bwin: Newcastle United want their seat in the Champions League back. Eddie Howe and his brood were nursing grievances this summer after failing to qualify for European competition.

da brdice: It had been a tough year, a testing year, with injuries running rampant throughout St. James’ Park and a contentious fourth-placed Champions League finish souring what had been a miraculous rise to prominence.

Money had been made available under PIF, but the Magpies proved that they could fashion something brilliant out of resources – which other Premier League clubs, it has to be said, seem incapable of achieving.

Howe created an iron-reinforced backline, a turbocharged engine and a slick and stylish attack. Up front, Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak have formed quite the partnership.

Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon are hitting their stride

A slow start to the 2024/25 campaign threatened further misery on Tyneside, with fans’ fears compounded by the remembrance that the summer transfer window left much to be desired.

Marc Guehi

However, things had started to pick up before the November international break, with Howe’s outfit claiming victories over Chelsea, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, advancing to the last eight in the Carabao Cup and stepping back into the mix at the front of the league, only three points behind third-placed Chelsea.

Gordon, United’s 2023/24 Player of the Season, and the free-scoring Isak have been crucial in propelling Newcastle back into a position of promise.

Isak, indeed, has scored in four successive matches for his club, finding his shooting boots at the perfect time, while Gordon brings so much pace and potency to the frontline, principally out on the left but dynamic enough to serve dutifully up front or on the alternate flank.

The duo are as fine as any in the English top flight and have been hailed for their “absolutely brilliant” displays by TNT Sports commentator Lucy Ward.

Newcastle have been mooted to be interested in signing a right winger this coming January, with recent reports suggesting Brentford’s £50m-rated goal machine Bryan Mbeumo to be at the top of the wishlist.

But… wait a second. What about Harvey Barnes?

But what about Harvey Barnes

Perhaps in the conversation for the most underrated Premier League forwards of the past several years, Barnes endured a frustrating first year at Newcastle, who signed Leicester City’s talented goal source for £38m after they suffered relegation at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 26-year-old sent St. James’ Park into a fanfare after scoring off the bench on his debut last season as Newcastle thrashed Aston Villa 5-1, but he picked up a foot injury little over a month later that ruled him out until February. As you can see from the table above, this was a big blow to his chances of cementing a starting berth from the offing.

A one-cap England international, Barnes has certainly started the current campaign off well, notching four goals and an assist for Howe’s cause despite only being handed five starting berths.

Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes

Praised as a “special talent” by analyst Statman Dave, the £80k-per-week winger might not be trusted for an immovable starting berth in Howe’s Premier League line-up, but the underlying data definitely demonstrates that his powers are being aptly used all the same.

Indeed, as per FBref, Barnes ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and the top 15% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, with his innate striking ability and knack at driving into the danger area leading the stats-focused site to draw up Barcelona’s Raphinha as a player of similar likeness.

The Brazil international might just be the most in-form player in the world right now, utterly mesmerising in his performances for club and country.

For La Blaugrana, he’s posted 12 goals and ten assists from 17 matches this season, which is utterly absurd and even beyond the rate of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who has earned acclaim this term for his potency, notching ten goals and assists apiece from as many games.

Like Barnes, the one-time Leeds United superstar is a penetrative and incisive attacking outlet, though he is admittedly more creative and expansive with his passing, ranking among the top 5% of positional peers for goals, the top 1% for assists and the top 9% for shot-creating actions per 90 (FBref).

But the very fact that Newcastle’s winger is likened to such a player speaks volumes of his skillset. Howe should really give him greater opportunity from the outset. After all, Newcastle have admired Raphinha for several years – though perhaps they already have their own version.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have actually let their intrigue be known only last month, having enquired about the 27-year-old but been met with a sharp response that he’s valued at some €100m (£83m).

Maybe not, then. Look, Newcastle need some more quality to improve their frontline, but Barnes is still not being handed the regularity of performances that he deserves. Given a bit more time and opportunity, maybe he could even mirror Raphinha.

Rangers flop is being compared to an £85m star after leaving Ibrox

da imperador bet: Glasgow Rangers underwent something of a rebuild during the summer transfer window as Philippe Clement allowed several first-team stars to depart Ibrox while bringing in quite a few new players.

da bwin: Out went the likes of Connor Goldson, Todd Cantwell, Sam Lammers, Scott Wright and Robby McCrorie as the Belgian sought to stamp his authority on his squad.

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

Not much was known about the transfer fees that the Light Blues brought in for these five players, but recently, chief financial officer James Taylor confirmed at the AGM that the figure was £800k.

Not just for one player, but for all five. An incredible revelation and proves just how poorly the club has been run in recent years.

Lammers is a prime example. He cost around £3m from Atalanta in the summer of 2023 as Michael Beale was looking to bolster his team.

Former Rangers boss Michael Beale.

He left after just a year, but it is evident given Taylor’s comments that the club lost a massive amount of money on the Dutchman.

Sam Lammers' statistics at Rangers

Given that Lammers had scored a grand total of six goals across the previous three seasons for four different clubs, it was hardly the form of a player who was meant to spearhead a title challenge.

Between August and January, Lammers played 31 times for the Light Blues, yet managed to get on the scoresheet just twice, while adding two assists. It became clear that Beale had wasted millions on a player who lacked the physical nature to shine in Scottish football.

Sam Lammers

In the Premiership, Lammers created only one big chance in 17 matches, also averaging 0.3 key passes and succeeding with 1.1 dribbles per game. Beale preferred to utilise the Dutchman in an attacking midfield slot, believing that his technical ability could cut through defences.

Unfortunately, this tactical blueprint didn’t quite work out, and he was loaned to FC Utrecht in January.

Whatever was lacking in Scotland finally emerged during his spell in the Eredivisie, as he scored 11 goals and provided four assists in just 20 matches for the club in what was a stunning turnaround in form during the second half of the season.

Any notion that he might make it at Ibrox was quelled when Clement sold him to Twente during the summer. This allowed the manager to get high wages off the bill while giving him space to bring in another player.

So far, however, the 27-year-old has been in the form of his life back in his homeland, emerging as one of the finest players in the Dutch top flight.

Sam Lammers' form after leaving Rangers behind

The attacker is certainly continuing the form he displayed last year into the current campaign for his new side.

While he may not have led them into the Champions League group stages, Twente are currently taking part in the Europa League, where the forward has scored twice in five games.

Domestically, however, is where Lammers is showcasing his finest form, that’s for sure.

In 15 matches for Twente, the former Rangers player has netted six times along with chipping in with two assists, propelling the club to fifth place in the league table at the time of writing.

Where Are They Now

Your star player or biggest flop has left the club but what are they doing in the present day? This article is part of Football FanCast's Where Are They Now series.

Not only does he rank second in the squad for goals and assists in the top flight, but Lammers also ranks second for shots (2.8), ninth for key passes (0.8) and fifth for successful dribbles per game (0.5) along with ranking second for big chances created (four), indicating just how impressive a signing he has been.

Rangers forward Sam Lammers.

Journalist Jonny McFarlane dubbed the move that brought Lammers to Scotland in 2023 as a “baffling deal” recently amid his form in the Netherlands.

Of course, Lammers wasn’t anywhere at the level required to perform for a club the size of Rangers, but perhaps his attributes simply weren’t suited to Scottish football.

As he has proven since the start of the year, the striker is not a bad player, far from it, but his move to the Light Blues was certainly a case of the wrong player at the wrong time.

His displays after leaving mean that the forward is now similar to a player who made a big-money move in the summer and was even touted for a £35m move to Chelsea; Samu Omorodion.

The youngster didn’t end up moving to London, joining Porto instead in a deal worth around £12.7m, which appears to be a stunning bargain given his current form and potential to get even better.

Now boasting an £85m release clause, the Spaniard has been good value for that price tag having scored 14 goals across 17 games, along with grabbing one assist in what has been an impressive start to life in Portugal.

According to FBref, Omorodion is the fifth-most comparable player to Lammers in the Europa League this term.

The pair have also registered similar statistics with regard to various performance metrics in the Champions League’s sister competition, such as goals and assists (2 vs 4), shots per 90 (2.68 vs 2.57), shot-creating actions per 90 (2.68 vs 3.42), goal-creating actions (2 vs 1) and touches in the attacking penalty area (24 vs 25).

These statistics prove that if the ex-Rangers man can continue performing well at this level, he could increase his market value substantially and finally realise his vast potential.

Although the forward didn’t live up to expectations during his spell in Scotland, Lammers is now proving plenty of people wrong back in his homeland.

Who knows, these displays this term might just see him secure another move to a top-five European league next summer. At 27, there is still plenty of life left in him yet.

No Indian match officials at Champions Trophy 2025

Javagal Srinath and Nitin Menon “mutually agreed” with the ICC that they would not undertake any officiating assignments in Pakistan

Nitin Menon will not officiate Champions Trophy 2025•BCCI

Champions Trophy 2025 will have no Indian officials with two of the likeliest candidates having excused themselves from travelling to Pakistan. It is understood that Javagal Srinath, one of the most prolific ICC match referees, and Nitin Menon, part of the ICC’s elite panel umpires, had “mutually agreed” with the ICC that they would not undertake any officiating assignments in the Pakistan leg of the tournament. And since all matches in Dubai will feature India and require neutral officials, it automatically rules out Indian match officials. Srinath, the former India fast bowler, is currently officiating India’s bilateral white-ball matches against England, but neutral officials have been the norm at all ICC tournaments.Though Pakistan remains the official host of the Champions Trophy, a hybrid model was adopted after protracted negotiations which allowed India to play all their matches, including the semi-final and the final, should they qualify, in Dubai. The same principle will apply to Pakistan in upcoming ICC tournaments hosted by India in the current cycle, whereby all their games will be played at a neutral venue. The 12-member umpires panel includes the ICC’s Umpire of the Year Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Michael Gough, Paul Reiffel, Chris Gaffaney and Kumar Dharmasena among others. Ahsan Raza is the sole Pakistani umpire on the list.David Boon, Ranjan Madugalle and Andrew Pycroft will be the match referees.Sean Easey, the ICC senior manager – umpires and referees, said: “We always try to name the most suitable and deserving officials for any event, and we are confident this group will do a fine job across the matches in Pakistan and the UAE.”Match officials for Champions Trophy 2025Umpires: Kumar Dharmasena, Chris Gaffaney, Michael Gough, Adrian Holdstock, Richard Illingworth, Richard Kettleborough, Ahsan Raza, Paul Reiffel, Sharfuddoula, Rodney Tucker, Alex Wharf, Joel WilsonMatch Referees: David Boon, Ranjan Madugalle, Andrew Pycroft
