Injury update on "brilliant" Sheffield Wednesday ace before Steel City derby

da bwin: After returning to winning ways with a comfortable 2-0 victory over Norwich City, Sheffield Wednesday have been handed a much-welcomed boost on the injury front ahead of this weekend’s Steel City derby.

Sheffield Wednesday injury news

da betano casino: The Owls have endured a mixed spell of form as of late. Whilst they were on the receiving end of a 6-2 thrashing at the hands of Watford last weekend, they bounced back on Tuesday night with a much-needed victory over Norwich, courtesy of goals from Josh Windass and Dominic Iorfa. Now, with those three points, Danny Rohl’s side sit 13th and six points adrift of the Championship’s dropzone.

That victory has come at the perfect time too, given that Sheffield United and the Steel City derby await this weekend. In a crucial clash against their rivals, Wednesday will be looking to upset the odds and spoil the Blades’ early promotion pursuit. Ahead of such an important game, it’s not just the three points that handed Rohl a major boost, either.

94% pass rate: 8/10 Sheffield Wednesday star was even better than Windass

Sheffield Wednesday got back to winning ways in the Championship with a 2-0 win over Norwich City.

ByKelan Sarson Nov 6, 2024

As confirmed by the manager, Iorfa is likely to be fit to face Sheffield United this weekend despite going off with an injury against Norwich on Tuesday night. Rohl told reporters, as relayed by The Star: “It’s always a decision, and you never know what happens. But he showed me immediately after the game that he’s ok.

“Let’s see in the next few hours, but I think he’ll be ready for the game at the weekend. I’m happy that he scored, I think that’s also a good reaction from him.”

Without a win at Bramall Lane since 2009, Sheffield Wednesday need all the help they can get which makes the news of Iorfa’s injury relief an even greater boost for Rohl and his side.

"Brilliant" Iorfa still a key man at Sheffield Wednesday

At the club since 2019, Iorfa remains an important figure at Sheffield Wednesday and will be crucial if Rohl’s side are to cause an upset against Sheffield United this weekend. The central defender even showed off his goalscoring exploits against Norwich in another string to his bow.

Well aware of his teammates’ importance for some time, Barry Bannan was previously full of praise for Iorfa, saying via The Star: “He’s brilliant. I said it earlier on in the season as well, since he’s come in and played centre-half he’s been unbelievable, he’s like a man mountain. He’s driven us forward, he’s made box headers. He’s at the top of his game at the minute.”

Still just 29 years old, the defender is likely to continue his impact for a few more years yet to keep Sheffield Wednesday afloat in the Championship and perhaps push them onto mid-table comforts.

Before those ambitions, however, Iorfa will have his sights on ending a nightmare run at Bramall Lane following the news that he avoided a serious injury against Norwich on Tuesday night. The Steel City derby, as ever, will be one to watch.

Not Isak or Gordon: Newcastle could have an £83m star in the making

da bwin: Newcastle United want their seat in the Champions League back. Eddie Howe and his brood were nursing grievances this summer after failing to qualify for European competition.

da brdice: It had been a tough year, a testing year, with injuries running rampant throughout St. James’ Park and a contentious fourth-placed Champions League finish souring what had been a miraculous rise to prominence.

Money had been made available under PIF, but the Magpies proved that they could fashion something brilliant out of resources – which other Premier League clubs, it has to be said, seem incapable of achieving.

Howe created an iron-reinforced backline, a turbocharged engine and a slick and stylish attack. Up front, Anthony Gordon and Alexander Isak have formed quite the partnership.

Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon are hitting their stride

A slow start to the 2024/25 campaign threatened further misery on Tyneside, with fans’ fears compounded by the remembrance that the summer transfer window left much to be desired.

Marc Guehi

However, things had started to pick up before the November international break, with Howe’s outfit claiming victories over Chelsea, Arsenal and Nottingham Forest, advancing to the last eight in the Carabao Cup and stepping back into the mix at the front of the league, only three points behind third-placed Chelsea.

Gordon, United’s 2023/24 Player of the Season, and the free-scoring Isak have been crucial in propelling Newcastle back into a position of promise.

Isak, indeed, has scored in four successive matches for his club, finding his shooting boots at the perfect time, while Gordon brings so much pace and potency to the frontline, principally out on the left but dynamic enough to serve dutifully up front or on the alternate flank.

The duo are as fine as any in the English top flight and have been hailed for their “absolutely brilliant” displays by TNT Sports commentator Lucy Ward.

Newcastle have been mooted to be interested in signing a right winger this coming January, with recent reports suggesting Brentford’s £50m-rated goal machine Bryan Mbeumo to be at the top of the wishlist.

But… wait a second. What about Harvey Barnes?

But what about Harvey Barnes

Perhaps in the conversation for the most underrated Premier League forwards of the past several years, Barnes endured a frustrating first year at Newcastle, who signed Leicester City’s talented goal source for £38m after they suffered relegation at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

The 26-year-old sent St. James’ Park into a fanfare after scoring off the bench on his debut last season as Newcastle thrashed Aston Villa 5-1, but he picked up a foot injury little over a month later that ruled him out until February. As you can see from the table above, this was a big blow to his chances of cementing a starting berth from the offing.

A one-cap England international, Barnes has certainly started the current campaign off well, notching four goals and an assist for Howe’s cause despite only being handed five starting berths.

Newcastle winger Harvey Barnes

Praised as a “special talent” by analyst Statman Dave, the £80k-per-week winger might not be trusted for an immovable starting berth in Howe’s Premier League line-up, but the underlying data definitely demonstrates that his powers are being aptly used all the same.

Indeed, as per FBref, Barnes ranks among the top 2% of attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues over the past year for goals scored and the top 15% for touches in the attacking penalty area per 90, with his innate striking ability and knack at driving into the danger area leading the stats-focused site to draw up Barcelona’s Raphinha as a player of similar likeness.

The Brazil international might just be the most in-form player in the world right now, utterly mesmerising in his performances for club and country.

For La Blaugrana, he’s posted 12 goals and ten assists from 17 matches this season, which is utterly absurd and even beyond the rate of Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah, who has earned acclaim this term for his potency, notching ten goals and assists apiece from as many games.

Like Barnes, the one-time Leeds United superstar is a penetrative and incisive attacking outlet, though he is admittedly more creative and expansive with his passing, ranking among the top 5% of positional peers for goals, the top 1% for assists and the top 9% for shot-creating actions per 90 (FBref).

But the very fact that Newcastle’s winger is likened to such a player speaks volumes of his skillset. Howe should really give him greater opportunity from the outset. After all, Newcastle have admired Raphinha for several years – though perhaps they already have their own version.

According to TEAMtalk, Newcastle have actually let their intrigue be known only last month, having enquired about the 27-year-old but been met with a sharp response that he’s valued at some €100m (£83m).

Maybe not, then. Look, Newcastle need some more quality to improve their frontline, but Barnes is still not being handed the regularity of performances that he deserves. Given a bit more time and opportunity, maybe he could even mirror Raphinha.

ICC rankings: Mooney back at No. 1 among T20I batters, Rodrigues zooms into top ten

Sophie Ecclestone and Sophie Devine have held on to their top spots in the bowlers’ and allrounders’ tables respectively

Gardner proud of the ‘fight we showed with our backs against the wall’

Beth Mooney has reclaimed the No. 1 spot for batters in the ICC women’s T20I rankings after topping the CWG 2022 run-scorers’ chart, finishing with 179 runs from five innings. Tahlia McGrath (No. 5) has joined Mooney, Meg Lanning (No. 2) and Alyssa Healy (No. 9) in the top ten, while Jemimah Rodrigues is now one of three Indians – who finished runners-up to Australia in Birmingham – in the top ten after a seven-spot jump to No. 10; Smriti Mandhana (No. 4) and Shafali Verma (No. 6) are the others.Full rankings tables

Mooney had slipped behind Lanning in the previous rankings update, but knocks of 70* against Pakistan, 36 in the semi-final against New Zealand, and a 41-ball 61 in the final against India gave her a tally of 179 runs for the tournament, and took her back past Lanning to the top. Lanning didn’t have a particularly good time of it with the bat in Birmingham, totalling just 91 runs, but it was enough to keep her in second place.Rodrigues went through a career slump recently, but has bounced back strongly, aggregating 146 runs at CWG 2022, with her best outings coming against Barbados (56 not out), against England in the semi-final (44 not out) and against Australia in the final (33). Only Mandhana scored more in the tournament among Indians, 159.2:23

Rodrigues: ‘This team has a lot of potential and will do wonders’

Among the bowlers, Sophie Ecclestone held on to the top spot after picking up five wickets in Birmingham, but there were some changes below her within the top ten. Katherine Brunt picked up five wickets too, at an economy rate of 5.06 (Ecclestone went at 6.29) and rose to No. 2, while Shabnim Ismail and Megan Schutt both moved up two positions, to fourth and fifth respectively. Sarah Glenn, who was at No. 2, has dropped to third place.Sophie Devine had a memorable tournament on the personal front, while leading New Zealand to a bronze-medal finish. Devine hit 177 runs, only behind Mooney’s tally, and picked up six wickets at an economy rate of 6.59, to stay atop the allrounders’ table. Ash Gardner, meanwhile, has moved up to No. 2, crossing Nat Sciver after scoring 96 runs and picking up five wickets in Birmingham. Deepti Sharma has moved up to fourth on that table. Some South African players also made gains, even though their team didn’t make the final four. Nonkululeko Mlaba has risen to eighth, up 14 places, among bowlers after picking up three wickets in three bowling innings, while batters Anneke Bosch (up five spots to No. 20) and Tazmin Brits (up six places to No. 22) were also on the move.

Liverpool targeting key signing in January as FSG now make funds available

da luck: Liverpool will reportedly be in the market for a key signing in the January transfer window, with FSG now making funds available after a quiet summer.

Liverpool short in key positions

da dobrowin: The Reds couldn’t have asked for a better start to life under Arne Slot, with the Dutchman making a seamless transition at Anfield, filling the void left by Jurgen Klopp impressively. Liverpool are top of the Premier League, excelling in the Champions League and have made it into the quarter-finals of the EFL Cup, so there is understandable positivity on show at Anfield currently.

That said, there was plenty of dissatisfaction about the lack of transfer business on show during the summer, with only Giorgi Mamardashvili and Federico Chiesa joining the Reds. The former has remained on loan at Valencia for this season, while the latter was a surprise signing who hasn’t yet got going at his new club.

Many supporters were desperate to see a No.6 come into Liverpool’s midfield, with a move for Real Sociedad hero Martin Zubimendi falling through, while others felt an extra centre-back was needed, given Ibrahima Konate’s injury record and the fact that Virgil van Dijk is now 33 years of age.

Liverpool target defender in January

According to a new report from Football Insider, Liverpool will look to sign a centre-back in January, with money set to be “available for the Reds in the mid-season window after their quiet summer”.

The update goes on to add that “Liverpool chiefs see January as an opportune time to strengthen as they bid to keep their Premier League title challenge on track”, with Michael Edwards and his transfer team “doing their due diligence on a potential centre-back signing in the new year”.

This will be music to the ears of many Liverpool fans, with the need for another centre-back evident during the summer, even though it hasn’t been an issue so far this season.

That’s because Konate and Van Dijk have been almost ever-present for the Reds in 2024/25 to date – the former was forced off at half-time in the 2-1 win at home to Brighton last weekend – but there is always the risk of an injury to one, especially the Frenchman.

Jarell Quansah showed in the opening game of the league season at Ipswich Town that he is still a work in progress, having been hauled off by Slot at the break, while Joe Gomez was excellent against Brighton, but has been playing as a full-back more than a centre-back in recent years.

Bringing in a new face makes complete sense for Liverpool, allaying the threat of an injury to Konate or Van Dijk derailing their Premier League title charge.

Liverpool thought they had the next Alonso before he was sold for just £6m

Liverpool once sold a flop for £6m who was supposed to be the next Alonso.

ByAngus Sinclair Nov 4, 2024

Whoever comes in shouldn’t be a short-term fix, however, instead being seen as a potential long-term replacement for Van Dijk, and perhaps even someone capable of playing at left-back as well, following Andy Robertson’s dip in form this season.

Williamson's 35-ball 61 punches New Zealand's ticket to the T20 World Cup semi-final

Josh Little’s hat-trick was Ireland’s biggest consolation as they slipped to a 35-run defeat in their last match of the tournament

Kane Williamson returned to form at just the right time, cracking 61 off 35 balls, as New Zealand became the first team to make it to the T20 World Cup semi-final. Although they crossed the line comfortably against Ireland, their status as one of the final four only became clear during the course of the second game at the Adelaide Oval on Friday. New Zealand’s 35-run win lifted their net run rate to 2.113 and make them favourites to top Group 1.Ireland had their moments in the game – they limited their opponents to only 12 runs off the last two overs courtesy a hat-trick from Josh Little, and openers Andy Balbirnie and Paul Stirling put on 68 off the first eight overs of their chase of 186 – but their challenge fizzled away against a skillful bowling attack.New Zealand’s effort with the ball was led by spin twins Mitchell Santner and Ish Sodhi, whose accurate changes of pace teased and foxed the Ireland batters in the middle overs. But much before that, Williamson had responded to his critics, finishing with a strike rate of 174.28 despite a typically quiet start.Conway gets stuck, Allen races away
Devon Conway struggled to get going on a pitch that seemed to be on the slower side. At the halfway stage of the innings, he had managed only 19 off 28 balls, which included 14 dots. Nothing he tried – making room, driving down the ground, lofting over the infield, and even nudging the ball around – seemed to click. But his opening partner Finn Allen seemed to be batting on another pitch. Having scored six runs off his first eight balls, he pounced but the moment Ireland introduced spin, tucking into Gareth Delany in the fourth over. He hit three boundaries off the legspinner, going over mid-off, drilling a drive down the ground, and lofting over cover. He hit Little for another four in the next over before hitting a six and a four back-to-back off Mark Adair in the final over of the powerplay. And just when it seemed he would take the game away from Ireland, he fell for 32 off 18, driving the next ball at a catchable height to mid-off.Williamson hits back in crucial match
The innings began in typical Williamson fashion: he got to 15 off as many balls, with one boundary. But things started to change from the 11th over, when he attacked Fionn Hand, going over the bowler’s head for four and then swinging a pull over the fine leg boundary.Williamson got brief support from Glenn Phillips, whose cameo of 17 from nine balls helped build on the momentum, but the New Zealand captain took it upon himself to ensure his side ended with a competitive total. In a throwback to last year’s T20 World Cup final where he had lifted New Zealand after a slow start, he reached his fifty like he had in Dubai, with a slog-sweep for six. From 30 off 23 balls, he raised his tempo to reach his fifty off 32 balls – again, the same number of balls as in the 2021 final. The 18th over saw Williamson slog-sweep Barry McCarthy for six, hack him for four over short third, and again swing him over deep midwicket for six, before he became the first of three back-to-back wickets to fall to Little in the penultimate over.Josh Little took the second hat-trick of this T20 World Cup•AFP/Getty Images

Little’s big show
Left-arm seamer Little continued to be the bright spark in a largely disappointing campaign for Ireland’s bowlers. New Zealand were 174 for 3 with 11 balls remaining, and threatened to push past 200 when Little bagged his hat-trick, the second of this tournament after Karthik Meiyappan’s effort for UAE against Sri Lanka in the first round.Little banged one short at Williamson, who pulled only to find fine leg. Next ball, Little got a bit of luck going his way when a length ball kept a touch low to beat James Neesham’s attempted leg-side swing and trap him in front. With nothing to lose, Neesham reviewed, but it was out of hope rather than belief that the lbw decision could be reversed. The hat-trick came when Little angled one into Santner, who missed a flick and reviewed the ensuing lbw decision, only for replays to confirm that the ball was on course to crash into middle stump.Little ended the tournament with 11 wickets, and became only the second bowler from Ireland to bag a hat-trick in T20Is after Curtis Campher’s four off four balls against Netherlands at last year’s T20 World Cup.Santner, Sodhi turn the screws
Stirling and Balbirnie got Ireland off to a stable start. The powerplay brought only 39 runs, but the gears began to shift when Williamson introduced spin. Stirling helped himself to a four and a a six in the seventh over, Santner’s first, before Balbirnie clubbed Sodhi for two sixes in the eighth; those two overs brought Ireland 29 runs. But Santner changed tack in the ninth over, slowing the ball down in the air, and Balbirnie chopped on first ball. Sodhi then cleaned Stirling up with a googly to start the tenth over, before Harry Tector spooned a catch to point off a loopy and slow Santner ball in the 11th.From the ninth over on, Santner and Sodhi combined to bowl five overs and concede just 26 runs, while nabbing three wickets. That passage of play derailed Ireland, who kept losing regular wickets to finish on 150 for 9.
