Bangladesh have recalled Sharmin Akhter and Jahanara Alam to their ODI squad for the upcoming three-match series against Ireland. Taj Nehar and Sanjida Akter, meanwhile, earned their first call-ups to the ODI side.Sharmin had missed the T20 World Cup earlier this year and had last played international cricket during the ODI series at home against India in July 2023. The 28-year-old has played 35 ODIs and 16 T20Is since she made her international debut in 2011. As for Jahanara, she is among the three Bangladesh players who have played at least 50 women’s ODIs. Jahanara has picked up 48 wickets in 52 matches at an average of 30.39.Middle-order batter Taj made her international debut in the Women’s T20 World Cup in October, while left-arm spinner Sanjida has played 18 WT20Is.This is Bangladesh’s first ODI series since the Australia series in April this year. From that squad, the selectors have excluded Farzana Akter, Sumaiya Akter, Disha Biswas and Nishita Akter.Bangladesh have won three out of six ODIs against Ireland. They won the last bilateral series between the two sides, back in 2016. This time, they will play the three ODIs in Dhaka on November 27 and 30 and December 2. They will also play three T20Is in Sylhet on December 5, 7 and 9.This is Bangladesh’s first international series since the Women’s T20 World Cup held in UAE in October.Bangladesh ODI squadNigar Sultana (capt), Nahida Akter, Murshida Khatun, Fargana Hoque, Sharmin Akhter, Sobhana Mostary, Shorna Akter, Ritu Moni, Rabeya Khan, Fahima Khatun, Marufa Akter, Jahanara Alam, Sultana Khatun, Taj Nehar, Sanjida Akther

Five players to watch at the T20 World Cup qualifiers

Some fast-scorers and miserly bowlers will hope to make a name for themselves in the UAE over the next two weeks

Peter Della Penna17-Oct-2019Deunte Darrell (Bermuda)Deunte Darrell runs off after his six off Hayden Walsh Jr. clinched Bermuda’s spot in the T20 World Cup Qualifier•Peter Della PennaMost people have their attention focused on Sussex allrounder Delray Rawlins and Kamau Leverock, the big-hitting, fast-bowling nephew of Dwayne Leverock. But Bermuda have a string of fearless power-hitters scattered through their lineup and few come into the tournament with more confidence and form than Darrell.Ten years after last representing the nation at U-19 level in 2009, Darrell made his senior debut at the Americas Regional Final in August on home soil. The tall, lanky middle-order batsman punished USA’s Hayden Walsh Jr. for a string of sixes in an unbeaten 30 off 23 balls that clinched Bermuda’s place in the UAE at the expense of USA. He clubbed a rapid 47* off 25 balls in a warm-up match win over Nigeria on Monday and is a fantastic fielder, regularly patrolling long-on in the death overs where his safe hands also play a significant role.JP Kotze (Namibia)JP Kotze slog sweeps over midwicket for six•Peter Della PennaFew batsmen in Associate cricket are in hotter form than the burly left-hander Kotze. Utilising windy conditions to hit with the breeze in south Florida, he struck 11 fours and eight sixes – all over the leg side including two 100-metre hits that went over the roof and out of the stadium at Central Broward Regional Park in Lauderhill – as part of his 136 off 109 balls against USA last month to record Namibia’s first ever ODI century.Against Hong Kong, another team featuring at the Qualifier in the UAE, Kotze brutalized their bowlers in scoring 148 off 86 balls at WCL Division Two in April, a win that clinched ODI status for Namibia. Kotze showed he can do it in T20I cricket too, scoring the country’s first-ever T20I ton against Botswana off just 43 balls in August.Ben Stevens (Jersey)Ben Stevens drives through cover•Peter Della PennaThe fulcrum of the Channel Islanders’ fortunes at bat and in the field, the tall left-arm spinning allrounder bats at No. 3 and is guaranteed to bowl a full quota in favorable conditions in the UAE. His value was underscored by his absence due to a medical issue in 2016 at WCL Division Four in Los Angeles. Having been a major cog in winning Division Five on home soil five months earlier, he watched from the sidelines in Los Angeles as Jersey finished in the bottom two to be relegated without him.He didn’t bowl much in the European Regional qualifier in June but came through with a key knock of 44 before taking 3 for 17 in a convincing win over Norway. Most recently, he played a vital role in Jersey’s pair of warm-up wins in Dubai leading into the start of the tournament by striking 32 off 19 balls to help seal a swift chase against Kenya before a miserly four-over spell of 1 for 14 helped bowl Singapore out for 112.Ravinderpal Singh (Canada)Ravinderpal Singh slogs a six over the leg side•Peter Della PennaComing off the Global T20 Canada for Toronto Nationals where middle-order opportunities were limited in a lineup featuring Yuvraj Singh and Kieron Pollard, Ravinderpal became the first player to strike a T20I century on debut when he belted 101 off 48 balls – including 10 sixes – in a win over Cayman Islands at White Hill Field in Bermuda. He eliminated any doubt that he could produce against higher-class teams when he savaged USA legspinner Timil Patel on the way to striking 67 off 33 balls with eight sixes to cement Canada’s undefeated tournament at the regional qualifier in Bermuda.Ravinderpal has adjusted to conditions in the UAE comfortably too. Entering at 50 for 3 in the seventh over chasing a challenging target of 165 against Singapore on Tuesday, he smoked an unbeaten 79 off 38 balls that included another seven sixes as Canada managed to seal the chase with two overs to spare. In addition to his power-hitting, he’s also fairly dependable as a catching fielder at long-on in the final few overs.Tim David (Singapore)If you’re questioning why Nepal and Sandeep Lamichhane aren’t in the UAE this week, Tim David is the answer. The Western Australia-raised batsman used his experience from Perth Scorchers to burn the Nepal bowling unit with 77 off 43 balls in July in a performance that knocked Nepal out and clinched Singapore’s first appearance in the global qualifier.David hasn’t slowed down since. He was the leading scorer at the opening Cricket World Cup Challenge League series held in Malaysia with four fifties in five innings in September, and he took that one-day form back into T20 cricket by sparking Singapore to their maiden win over a Full Member when he made 41 off 23 balls in a four-run win over Zimbabwe on September 29.

Jordan Cox ruled out of New Zealand Tests with fractured right thumb

He sustained a blow to his right hand during nets; his replacement will be announced in due course

Vithushan Ehantharajah24-Nov-2024Jordan Cox has been ruled out of England’s Test series against New Zealand after sustaining a fractured right thumb during a nets session ahead of the final day of their tour match against Prime Minister’s XI.The incident occurred on Sunday morning in Queenstown where England have been preparing for the first Test, which begins on Thursday at the Hagley Oval. Cox was taken to a local hospital for a scan that revealed the extent of the damage. The 24-year-old was all set to make his Test debut with regular keeper Jamie Smith missing the tour for the birth of his first child.A replacement will be announced in due course, with Durham’s Ollie Robinson expected to be handed a maiden call-up, ahead of England’s white-ball regular Phil Salt and Essex’s Michael Pepper, who toured the Caribbean with the limited-overs side. Other keeping options included Somerset’s James Rew and Lancashire’s Matty Hurst, both of whom are due to tour South Africa with the Lions. Jonny Bairstow, still with a year remaining on his central contract, is unlikely to be recalled at this juncture.Related

  • Williamson's return creates 'selection headaches' for NZ after Young's stellar India tour

Ollie Pope stood in for Cox for the culmination of the warm-up fixture, but England will not want to burden him with more responsibility on top of his duties at No. 3. Having averaged 11 on last month’s tour of Pakistan, a strong showing from Cox might have tested the selectors’ loyalty to the vice-captain.Cox will now have to wait a little longer to complete the set of caps having debuted in the ODI and T20I formats in the last two months. He will remain with the squad in Christchurch and may opt for a break in Australia before returning home having had little time off since the end of the English summer.”I’m gutted for Jordan (Cox),” Test head coach Brendon McCullum said. “He has been shaping up nicely, both with the bat and gloves, since we got to New Zealand.”That’s sport, and unfortunately, these things happen. We will get around him and look after him. He is resilient, and his time will come at some point in the future.”The immediate aftermath of Cox’s injury left England short of bodies for play on Sunday, resulting in James Anderson donning the whites four months after he was pushed into international retirement. With three players opting out of the match for extra time in the nets, Anderson subbed in the field, alongside captain Ben Stokes who had chosen to sit out the first day’s play.Jacob Bethell and Rehan Ahmed will join the rest of the squad in Christchurch on Monday after a few days off following the white-ball tour of the Caribbean which finished last week. Cox’s replacement should be on deck in the next 48 hours.

Inter Miami player ratings vs Pumas: Rodrigo De Paul scores first Herons goal, Luis Suárez stars as club reaches Leagues Cup quarterfinals

The Herons overturned a first half deficit to ease into the last eight of the Leagues Cup

Rodrigo De Paul scored his first goal for Inter Miami as the Herons booked their spot in the Leagues Cup quarterfinals with a commanding 3-1 win over Mexican giants Pumas.

De Paul struck early to set the tone, and Luis Suárez ran the show in the final third, having a hand in all three goals. Javier Mascherano's side made light work of one of the tournament’s pre-tournament favorites, who now exit the competition earlier than expected.

struggled to find a foothold early on, especially in the absence of Lionel Messi. They lacked a focal point, instead opting to swing the ball around without real direction or intent. And Pumas took advantage with their one real good chance, Jorge Ruvalcaba finishing a well-constructed counter with a poked finish in the 34th minute.

But responded. Yannick Bright, finding form after an injury layoff, played architect. His sweeping pass found Suarez, who cut inside and found a surging De Paul, who tucked home to level things on the stroke of halftime. Miami thought they had a second when Suarez found the net off a set piece, but he was marginally offside when he finished – and VAR correctly ruled his goal out.

He was handed another chance 10 minutes later. Telasco Segovia's stray touch in the box hit the arm of a Pumas defender. The referee pointed to the spot, and Suarez converted with aplomb, chipping the ball down the middle. They grabbed a third to seal it after 70 minutes. Suarez played architect, perfectly feeding Tadeo Allende, who couldn't miss from close range. It might have been more, but Benjamin Cremaschi and Allende both missed late chances. Still, it won't matter, asremain in the hunt for another trophy.

Erratic at times, and didn't track his man on the Pumas opener.

Emily Arlott, Charis Pavely share eight wickets as Sparks thrash Vipers

Central Sparks turned the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy table upside down by thrashing league leaders Southern Vipers by seven wickets at Worcester.Sparks took full advantage of Vipers’ depletion by international calls to add another emphatic victory to their five-wicket Charlotte Edwards Cup win over Georgia Adams’ side at New Road in June.Put in, Vipers were bowled out for 183 in 48.4 overs as Georgia Elwiss fought a lone battle against a potent attack led by Emily Arlott (4 for 15) and Charis Pavely (4 for 31).Sparks then cruised to a seven-wicket win with 64 balls to spare after a polished opening stand of 95 between Eve Jones (54) and Ami Campbell (48) gave the pursuit a perfect platform.Vipers started solidly with an opening partnership of 64 between Rhianna Southby (36) and Ella McCaughan (26) but were then hit by a superb spell from Arlott. The 26-year-old broke through when Southby top-edged a pull and removed the other opener in her next over when McCaughan drove round an inswinger and was bowled. After Adams and Emily Windsor edged to Arlott to wicketkeeper Abi Freeborn, four wickets had fallen for 28 runs in 57 balls.Eve Jones’ 54 set up the run chase•Getty Images

Elwiss dug in for Vipers but partners came and went as the Sparks’ spinners got to work. Hannah Baker trapped Abi Norgrove lbw on the sweep, and Pavely bowled Nancy Harman with a beauty. Georgia Davis flighted one onto Linsey Smith’s off stump and Pavely added two more wickets in four balls when Mary Taylor was lbw and Freya Davies was bowled through the gate. Last batter Ava Lee lasted 28 balls to help Elwiss add 36 but Vipers still came in well short. They desperately needed to strike early with the ball but Sparks opening pair Jones and Campbell put 50 on the board in 12 overs. The openers turned the chase into a formality with a stand of 95 in 19.3 overs before Campbell sent a low return catch to Lee.Davina Perrin edged Adams to wicketkeeper Southby and the Vipers’ captain removed her Sparks counterpart when Jones was caught on the long on rope but the Sparks skipper departed with her side on the threshold of victory.A dazzling cameo from Katie George (38 not out from 29 balls) saw Sparks over the line and left Vipers still with work to do to qualify and Sparks reflecting on what might have been if they had produced performances of this quality on a consistent basis.

Wolvaardt, Jansen win big at CSA annual awards

Quinton de Kock was named the men’s ODI Player of the Year, while Reeza Hendricks won the T20I award

Firdose Moonda06-Sep-2024Laura Wolvaardt, South Africa’s women’s captain, was the big winner at the CSA annual awards, where she picked up five prizes including Women’s Player of the Year following a stellar 2023-24 season. Not only did Wolvaardt accept the leadership role permanently in the past season, she was also South Africa’s leading run-scorer in ODIs and T20Is in the period under consideration.Fittingly, she was named the Women’s ODI Player of the Year and Women’s T20I Player of the Year. Her popularity among her team-mates and supporters was clear as she also took home the Players’ Player of the Year and Fans’ Player of the Year awards. She was joined by Marco Jansen, who was named as the Men’s Player of the Year in recognition of his all-round contributions which included 17 wickets at the ODI World Cup and impressive performances with bat and ball in the Boxing Day Test against India.Related

The awards recognise achievements from May 1, 2023 to April 30, 2024, so performances at June’s Men’s T20 World Cup and in Test and T20I series in West Indies will be considered only at next year’s events. The reason for the awards being held in September rather than immediately after the season in May is because CSA’s sponsors require all nationally contracted players to appear at the ceremony and that would not be possible in May because of the IPL.South Africa only played four Tests in the period under consideration – two against India and two with a second-string side in New Zealand – which made choosing a Test player of the Year tough. David Bedingham, who scored 56 on debut against India and 87 and 110 in his two second innings in New Zealand, was recognised for his efforts. Bedingham was also named the International Newcomer of the Year.In white-ball formats, Quinton de Kock, who has now retired from 50-over cricket, was named the ODI Player of the Year after his four centuries at the 2023 World Cup. Reeza Hendricks, meanwhile, won the T20I Player of the Year award. Hendricks was the only South African batter to score a half-century in the period under consideration which excludes the T20 World Cup. Keshav Maharaj, the left-arm spinner who defied medical odds to make his comeback three months early from an Achilles rupture and play at the ODI World Cup, was voted by his peers as the Players’ Player of the Year.ESPNcricinfo LtdTwo other marquee awards were won by female internationals: the Best Delivery Fuelled by KFC and Makhaya Ntini Power of Cricket Award. Marizanne Kapp’s inswinger that bowled Beth Mooney in South Africa’s first ODI win over Australia was judged the best ball in the season while Masabata Klaas was acknowledged for overcoming the odds to carve a career in cricket. The Makhaya Ntini award, which is in its third year, seeks to recognise players who, like Ntini, have risen above tough circumstances and this is the first time the award has been won by a female cricketer.Klaas had her daughter Rethabile in 2013, just before South Africa’s women’s cricket professionalised, and she has been a single mother though her career. She took three years out of the game but with the support of her own mother, Paulinah, was able to return to cricket and played a key role in South Africa’s automatic qualification to the 2021 50-over World Cup. She became the 10th women’s bowler to take a hat-trick, doing it against Pakistan in 2019. She is seventh on South Africa’s all-time ODI wicket-takers’ list and sixth in T20Is. Earlier this year, she spoke to ESPNcricnfo’s Powerplay podcast about her journey in the game and how she has taken on a mentoring role in the women’s side. Klaas and other cricketing mothers were also on the most recent episode of Powerplay. On the domestic front, legspinner Nqabayomzi Peter who bowled the Lions to victory in the CSA T20 Cup and made his international debut in June was named the men’s Domestic Newcomer of the Season and T20 Challenge Player of the Season. Lions’ allrounder Wiaan Mulder, who was the third-highest run-scorer and took 16 wickets in division one of the four-day division one first-class competition was named four-day domestic Player of the Season. Western Province allrounder Mihlali Mpongwana, the joint second-highest wicket-taker in the one-day cup, won the one-day Domestic Player of the Season award. In the women’s domestic competition, left-arm spinner Nonkululeko Mlaba was named women’s one-day Player of the Season, while Tazmin Brits won the women’s T20 Player of the Season award after finishing as the leading run-scorer in the domestic tournament, with three centuries.

Frank holds Tottenham talks over signing £300k-p/w ace who's open to joining

Tottenham Hotspur boss Thomas Frank is already making his mark when it comes to his new club’s summer recruitment drive, starting with their £30 million permanent deal for Mathys Tel.

In the build up to Sunday morning’s announcement that the Frenchman is now an indefinite Spurs player, reports claimed that Frank personally advocated for Tel to remain in north London.

The 51-year-old’s wish was ultimately granted by chairman Daniel Levy, with Frank set to utilise the now-former Bayern Munich sensation throughout his debut season in the Lilywhites dugout and beyond.

However, their pursuit of new wingers won’t end with Tel’s signature, as Spurs are believed to be in the market for a Timo Werner replacement on the opposing flank as well (Ben Jacobs).

Links to Southampton starlet Tyler Dibling have re-emerged this week, following reports that Bournemouth’s Antoine Semenyo and Brentford’s Bryan Mbeumo are both top targets for Spurs as well.

Brentford's BryanMbeumoreacts

While Mbeumo currently prefers a move to Man United as things stand, the Cameroonian is still intrigued by a move to Tottenham (Sky Sports), while other media sources claim Spurs have reached out to Semenyo’s representatives.

Another intriguing wide option for Frank comes in the form of £300,000-per-week Man City star Jack Grealish.

The England international was a key member of City’s treble-winning side of 2023, but he’s since struggled to establish himself as a firm fixture in Pep Guardiola’s starting eleven since that famed campaign.

Manchester City's JackGrealishon the substitutes bench

Guardiola addressed his future in a Club World Cup press conference this week, stating that the 29-year-old needs to showcase his true quality on a weekly basis.

“Jack is an exceptional player. The only reason why he didn’t play last season is, of course, my decisions,” said the City boss.

“And we decided he has to play, and the club was honest, he’s honest. He’s incredibly respected and loved by the team, and we decided the best is for him to stay [behind] and have a place he feels he can play and come back to being the player that was in the year of the Treble or all his career at Aston Villa.

“Without him it wouldn’t have been possible, it would’ve been more difficult to get what we achieved in the Treble season. But the fact is, the last two seasons, he didn’t play much, and he has to come back to play and have the butterflies in his stomach that he can play every three days and show again the quality he has.”

Thomas Frank holds talks with Tottenham about signing Jack Grealish

With Werner leaving and a summer exit for Son Heung-min on the cards, amid interest from Saudi Arabia, there is every possibility that the ex-Aston Villa star could be a mainstay under Frank next season.

According to Football Transfers, the Dane is already taking a keen interest in Grealish, who’s come up regularly in “extensive” conversations about recruitment between Frank and the Tottenham hierarchy.

Jeremy Doku and Jack Grealish celebrate

During these internal talks, Frank was keen to discover the state of play regarding Spurs’ talks with Grealish’s representatives, and it has emerged that the winger is actually open to joining them before deadline day on September 1.

However, Grealish’s hefty salary is posing a real issue, so Tottenham will need to find middle ground there.

Other reports claim Grealish could leave Eastlands on loan, but if Levy wishes to strike a permanent deal, the price is around £50 million.

Worst sale since Mane: "World-class" Liverpool star now in talks to leave

Liverpool hardly need a rebuild, and could likely go again next season, qualifying for the Champions League and competing for major trophies, with just minimal investment.

But FSG are prepared to reward Arne Slot for winning the Premier League in his first year in charge by making a ferocious statement of intent in the market.

Richard Hughes and Arne Slot

Already, the Reds have signed Jeremie Frimpong to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold; Milos Kerkez and Florian Wirtz are in talks to follow.

But it’s not just incomings on sporting director Richard Hughes’ mind. Liverpool have a few potential high-profile exits to contend with.

Liverpool transfer exit news

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez is expected to leave this summer, having been persistently linked with a move to the Saudi Pro League. La Liga giants Atletico Madrid have also shown an interest.

Liverpool striker Darwin Nunez

Having scored only seven times across all competitions for Slot’s side, the 25-year-old would probably be best off wiping the slate clean and trying his hand elsewhere, especially since plans have been drawn up for a new number nine.

Though Nunez is tenacious and likeable, there’s no doubt he’s regressed in a Liverpool shirt over the past year, incongruous and ineffective as the frontman of Slot’s set-up.

On the note of players in need of a switch, Harvey Elliott has admitted on England U21 duty that he may need to leave Anfield this summer.

Elliott, 21, is a boyhood Liverpool supporter and a special creative talent, but his opportunities have been limited since Klopp departed, and a move away might be for the benefit of his career.

However, Liverpool may not just be selling those they wish to part with. Indeed, Luis Diaz is being mooted for a move to Saudi Arabia, and it might prove a bigger mistake than many are anticipating.

Why selling Luis Diaz would be a mistake

Liverpool acted swiftly to replace Sadio Mane with Diaz before their Senegalese legend had even left the club. In January 2022, FSG purchased Diaz from Porto in a deal, rising to £49m, and his predecessor stayed on until the end of the campaign.

When Liverpool sold Mane to Bayern Munich, however, they perhaps didn’t grasp how out of kilter it would knock Klopp’s side. The 2022/23 season sits as an infamous outlier across the illustrious span of Klopp’s tenure, a dark and permanent blot on his copybook.

Sadio Mane Liverpool graphic

Though Mane objectively reached a higher level of quality than Diaz, the Colombian is still one of the most important parts of Slot’s system, and he’s just come off his most productive campaign too, having posted 17 goals and eight assists across 50 appearances.

Regarded as a “world-class player” in the view of his former German boss, at least, Diaz’s unique value for Slot has been further underscored by his regular deployment as a false nine, combating an absence of reliable central striking options.

Diaz might be happy at Liverpool, but the riches of the Saudi Pro League could tempt him to pack up and leave off the back of winning the Premier League.

According to Foot Mercato, talks appear to have already begun, with Al-Hilal having established contacts with the 28-year-old as they sound out a bid.

Liverpool forward Luis Diaz

Liverpool were warned that losing the “irreplaceable” Mane would “knock them sideways” by former star Dean Saunders in 2022, and this proved to be the case – in the short term, at least.

Diaz has done a rather good job in the years since, now a Carabao Cup and Premier League champion in the seasons since Mane’s departure.

Given the need to make numerous signings this summer, maybe Liverpool would be better off warding away interest in their dynamic left winger.

Matthew Fisher joins Surrey from Yorkshire from 2025

Surrey have shored up their bowling stocks in anticipation of a heavy international workload for their seamers in 2025, by signing Matthew Fisher from Yorkshire.Fisher, 27 next month, has played one Test to date, on England’s tour of the Caribbean in 2022, after which he was awarded an ECB pace bowling development contract. He confirmed his enduring qualities by claiming 18 wickets in three games last month, to help Yorkshire secure promotion to Division One of the Vitality County Championship. To date, Fisher has claimed 144 first-class wickets at 26.58, including a best of 5 for 30 against Derbyshire in 2023. He is also a useful lower-order batter, with a career-best of 88 against Leicestershire. His move comes in the wake of Conor McKerr’s recent departure to Nottinghamshire, and with Surrey having secured their third consecutive County Championship title, despite a glut of England call-ups testing the renowned depth of their squad. In 2025, Surrey can once again expect to be without Gus Atkinson for significant portions of the season, while Sam Curran, Jamie Overton and Reece Topley are likely to be absent on England white-ball duty at key periods of the campaign. What’s more, Surrey’s Australia-born seamer Dan Worrall – arguably the player of the season with 52 wickets at 16.15 – will next year be qualified to play for England, and even at the age of 33, he may come into consideration by the national selectors.”I’ve always looked to strengthen our squad straight after we’ve won the Championship,” Alec Stewart, Surrey’s outgoing director of cricket, said. “So bringing in a player of Matt’s ability and experience made perfect sense. With Conor McKerr leaving the club and the expected England call-ups next summer, it’s important we maintain a quality bowling group.”I actually first met Matt when he was 15, on a visit to his Yorkshire secondary school on behalf of a cricket sponsor and have followed his career from afar ever since. I now look forward to welcoming him to the Kia Oval and watching him perform well for Surrey CCC.”Fisher added: “I’m both excited and honoured to have signed for Surrey. I’ve watched the recent successes of the squad with huge admiration and I hope to contribute to more success in the coming years.”I’m also looking forward to working with some of the best players and coaches in the game.”
