GOAL looks at early frontrunners for the 2025 MLS MVP, including reigning award winner Lionel Messi
Lionel Messi's brilliant 2024 deservedly resulted in his winning Landon Donovan MLS MVP award. The Argentine led Inter Miami to the Supporters' Shield title, with the club setting a regular season points record. It was a remarkable display capped off by earning the most coveted individual award in MLS.
Things haven't quite followed suit in 2025. Inter Miami have fallen seven points back from first in the Eastern Conference, and are winless in six of their last seven across all competitions. And as a result, it's allowed other teams around the league to fill the void – and other individuals to find the spotlight.
Tai Baribo and the Philadelphia Union are flying, with the Israel international being the breakout star of 2025. Evander's $12M move to FC Cincinnati is working wonders, too, as the Brazilian continues to shine with his new team. And then, there's the Columbus Crew, who remain one of the elite sides in MLS – with Diego Rossi emerging as potential superstar.
Who sits atop the throne at this point in the season? GOAL presents the latest edition of MLS MVP Rankings.

1Tai Baribo: Philadelphia Union
What a brilliant start to the 2025 campaign for Baribo and the Union. This is a performance that has come out of nowhere, and one that is starting to turn heads around the league – and potentially – abroad.
Leading the league in scoring, Baribo has 11 goals this season, and is coming off a matchweek where he scored not one, but two game-winners in the span of four days. He's led the Union to the top of the Eastern Conference and the Supporters' Shield, and is MLS' most electric forward at the moment.
The Israel international has already surpassed his goal tally from 2024, with the 27-year-old bagging nine times last season. Of his 11 goals, just one has been a penalty kick, while he''s surpassed his xG by a large margin.
His expected goals tally is just 7.82, and with 11, he's proven to be one of the most clinical finishers in the league, scoring from incredibly tight angles that have razor-thin margins.
If he keeps scoring at this pace, there's no telling what heights he could reach in 2025.

2Evander: FC Cincinnati
Evander could have won the trophy last year. His numbers were emphatic, and across the of the regular season, he was the most consistent performer in the league.
Maybe it was because he played for a team, Portland Timbers, that had a tragic defense last season. Maybe it was because it's just not possible to escape the shadow of Messi. Regardless, Evander is now on FC Cincinnati, and he's playing at an even higher level.
Cincy are tied for first in the Eastern Conference and the Supporters' Shield standings with the Union, and only trail by criteria points. A big reason for that has been the Brazilian attacking midfielder, who has replaced Lucho Acosta with ease, while offering an upgrade centrally and in the final-third.
The 26-year-old has seven goals, along with three assists, in just 11 starts and 12 appearances. He missed a brief stretch due to injury, but is nearly averaging a goal-contribution per game. He's consistently produced in the midfield as well, boasting an 81 percent passing completion percentage rate. His goals have come from brilliant moments, too, with the seven strikes coming off an xG of just 2.89.
Trailing only Messi in that category, Evander is a set-piece genius, and has become one of the most deadly free-kick takers in the league. He's shining right now, and this could be his year.
MLS Media
3Diego Rossi: Columbus Crew
Rossi has become the centerpiece for Wilfried Nancy's side to begin 2025, taking a huge role in the attack following the offseason departure of star forward Cucho Hernandez. The Uruguayan winger has become their biggest threat in and around the box, with seven goals and two assists in 13 starts.
The 27-year-old has been one of the most clinical forwards in the league, garnering an xG of 7.29 that he's lived up to with his seven strikes. Across the 13 appearances, he's registered 19 shots on target. Of his 42 total attempts, 32 have come off his right foot, primarily when he cuts inside off the wing, or when he's fed in the box while playing as a center-forward.
He's developed a ruthlessness in the final-third that we did not see in 2024 and he's already on track to nearly double his goalscoring tally from last season. In 2024, he had 12 goals and 11 assists, and through Matchday 14, he's just five short of his marke from last year.
The Crew, meanwhile, are third in the Eastern Conference, just two points out from first place Philadelphia.

4Lionel Messi: Inter Miami
It's safe to say his 2025 season has not gone to plan. He's appeared in just 10 of Miami's 13 games, dealing with an injury early on, with only nine starts in MLS play. During that stretch, he's scored just five goals and recorded two assists – and although those are relatively good numbers, they're beneath the Messi standard.
The reigning league MVP, Messi is a magician on the pitch – there is no denying that he is the most talented player in the league and that on his best day, he is miles ahead of the individual behind him. However, he's slumped to begin the season. He's growing increasingly frustrated with what's happening around him on the pitch.
Messi will be in MVP contention all season, of course. He won eight Ballon d'Or trophies for a reason. At this point, though, he's not leading the race, and not where he'd expect to be nearly halfway into the 2025 season.

While Liverpool will be confident that they have enough to turn their guests over, Arne Slot does have to contend with a number of injuries.
Liverpool expecting absentees
Wednesday’s frenetic Merseyside clash could call for Slot to make one or two alterations, especially with a quick turnaround needed ahead of the coming midweek trip to Villa Park.
Liverpool managerArneSlotbefore the match
Curtis Jones is ineligible for this one after his part in the post-match ruckus at Goodison, resulting in a second booking from referee Michael Oliver. Slot has been charged, but the ongoing judiciary process means that he’s expected to be in the dugout this afternoon.
Meanwhile, Trent Alexander-Arnold will be looking to return to the starting line-up after a fitness issue, replacing Conor Bradley.
Joe Gomez and Tyler Morton remain sidelined, though the former isn’t too far away from returning to first-team training.
Should Gakpo be sidelined for this one, Slot will need to find a way to maintain the overall fluency of the thriving frontline. Luckily, Liverpool aren’t exactly bereft of options.
The players who could replace Cody Gakpo
The most obvious pick to replace Gakpo on the left flank is Luis Diaz. After all, the Colombian is a winger, only featuring in a false-nine kind of focal role this season due to Slot’s dissatisfaction with the likes of Darwin Nunez, who has six goals from 33 matches.

Whether Nunez is presented with a starting berth remains to be seen, but the Uruguayan has suffered patchy form throughout the whole of the campaign and Slot seems more at ease unleashing the 25-year-old in the late stages, using his pace and energy to pick leggy defences apart.
Diaz is a player who goes through waves of potent form, but he has demonstrated through multi-goal performances against the likes of Tottenham Hotspur and Bayer Leverkusen in the Champions League that he can bag from the middle. The Colombian’s game is also more than just that of a goalscorer, with slick movement and intelligent decisions enabling the free-scoring success of the likes of Gakpo and Mohamed Salah.
Slot knows what he’s doing, and if he wishes to keep Diaz at centre-forward, an interesting change might be to unleash Diogo Jota on the left flank with the view toward emulating Gakpo’s prolificness.
While Salah is tearing Europe apart with so many goals and assists, there’s a sense that the 32-year-old talisman is shouldering a heavy burden. Diaz, for example, has gone five Premier League matches without a single goal involvement.
However, Gakpo has been thriving, bagging in seven straight Anfield appearances.
Cody Gakpo celebrates for Liverpool
This is why Jota could be so important for the home side, especially with the added incentive to impress against his former outfit, who Liverpool paid £41m for in 2020.
A “deadly” finisher in the final third, as has been said by BBC analyst Raj Chohan, Jota ranks among the top 13% of Premier League forwards in 2024/25 for goals scored (0.71), as per FBref, also among the top 1% for touches in the attacking penalty area and the top 4% for progressive carries per 90.
This perfectly illustrates the Portugal international’s innate goalscoring sense and his athleticism, deceptively tricky on the ball and endowed with the positional sense that the likes of Salah and Diaz can use to find him with crisp passes or confusing movements, creating space.
Liverpool forward Diogo Jota
One of Jota’s superpowers is his effortless ability to provide across the frontline. He’s capable with both feet and surprisingly adept in the air too. Slot tends to deploy him up front but with 85 goal involvements from 178 matches on the left wing, Jota is hardly untested in that area.
It goes to show that Liverpool have such impressive strength in depth and surely have enough to put this afternoon’s visitors to the sword. Jota, for sure, will be eager to make his mark after missing much action over the past few months due to injury.
The caveat to all this is that the 28-year-old, who was hailed as one of the team’s most “clinical” players by Jamie Carragher, doesn’t boast the finest of records against the Molineux side. He’s won all seven of fixtures against Wolves but has only scored once, supplying two assists.
However, with 64 Liverpool goals and 21 further assists from just 104 starting appearances since making the move to Merseyside, Jota is an invariably dangerous presence in the final third with the ball-carrying skill and sharp awareness to step into Gakpo’s boots and provide the left side with the assuredness needed to lessen Salah’s load.
Diogo Jota scores for Liverpool
Liverpool need to bounce back from the setback at Everton, and with a victory over Wolves, fans will be excited by having stepped one place closer to lifting the Premier League title for the first time under Slot’s wing.
Wouldn’t it be quite something?
Slot has already found Luis Diaz 2.0 in Liverpool's "frightening" 17 y/o
Liverpool believe they have one of Europe’s biggest talents in this forward.

Lewis Hill maintained concentration in energy-sapping heat to score his seventh first-class century as Leicestershire battled for first-innings parity on the third day of their LV= Insurance County Championship match with Gloucestershire at Bristol. The visiting skipper’s 103 occupied nearly five and a half hours and led his side to a total of 350 in reply to 368. Rishi Patel cracked 59 off 70 balls, while Louis Kimber contributed 34 before being given out for obstructing the field.Seamer Zaman Akhter was the most successful Gloucestershire bowler with four for 33 from 17 overs in only his third first-class match. By the close, the hosts had made nine without loss in their second innings and a draw looks by far the most likely outcome tomorrow.A sweltering day began with Leicestershire 23 without loss. Openers Patel and Sol Budinger set about the task of reducing the deficit of 345 in positive manner.Patel looked in prime form, timing the ball sweetly and pulling a six off Tom Price as the pair brought up fifty in the seventh over of the morning. They looked set to build a significantly larger stand when, with the total 66, Budinger, on 21, aimed an ugly cross-batted swing at a wide delivery from Akhter and edged to wicketkeeper James Bracey.Patel struck fours off successive deliveries from Danny Lamb to reach an impressive 56-ball half-century and followed up with a straight six off Zafar Gohar’s first over, the 19th of the innings. It was a surprise when Patel fell in the following over, edging a defensive shot off Akhter to second slip with the score on 85. A watchful Hill took 24 balls to get off the mark, before sweeping two fours off Gohar.Akhter’s initial five-over spell from the Ashley Down Road End finished with figures of two for five, reward for the 24-year-old generating sustained pace and bounce. At lunch, the scoreboard read 132 for two off 37 overs, with Hill unbeaten on 34. The afternoon session was interrupted at just after 2.15pm by a fire alarm, triggered by the effects of the high temperatures, which resulted in the pavilion being evacuated.Among those required to leave the building were the scorers, so play was held up. But after a ten-minute delay, normal service was resumed.Colin Ackermann contributed 21 to a stand of 66 with Hill before cutting at a wide delivery from Akhter and edging to Ben Charlesworth at first slip. Two runs off Tom Price took Hill to a half-century off 108 balls, with six fours, out of a total of 182 for three. Slowly but surely, Leicestershire moved to within striking distance of their opponents’ first-innings total. They lost former Gloucestershire player Peter Handscomb for 25 with the score on 193 when off-spinner Ollie Price squeezed a delivery through his back-foot defence to clip off stump. But by tea Kimber had helped the indefatigable Hill add 40 for the fifth wicket and their team looked comfortably placed at 233 for four. The pair took the score to 258 before Kimber, on 34, departed in unusual fashion, given out after playing a delivery from off-spinner Ollie Price defensively into the ground, up onto his shoulder and then flicking the ball away with a hand.Price immediately appealed for obstruction and umpires Graham Lloyd and Paul Baldwin consulted before quickly sending Kimber on his way.Hill had an anxious moment on 83 when he played a delivery from Tom Price with the second new ball to gully and was called for a suicidal single by Rehan Ahmed, Miles Hammond’s throw to the bowler’s end lacking the necessary accuracy to run him out.It was all the assistance Hill required to move to three figures off 205 balls, with 12 fours. But Akhter wasn’t finished and produced a brute of a short ball, which Ahmed, having breezed to 28 off 32 balls, could only fend to second slip.Hill’s long vigil ended when he gave a return catch to Ollie Price and Gohar quickly sent back Chris Wright and Callum Parkinson. But Tom Scriven’s 30 before falling lbw to Ollie Price (three for 40) ensured a third batting point for Leicestershire.
Mumbai Indians, Punjab Kings, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad – what went wrong, who stood out, and more
Vishal Dikshit and Sruthi Ravindranath09-Oct-2021
Mumbai Indians
Where they finished
The defending champions slipped four places to fifth this time. They left it to the very last day of the league stage to keep their qualification chances – however unlikely – alive, before they fizzled out.How the season went
It mostly went fine for Mumbai until the tournament moved to the UAE. They had won four of their seven games in India in the first leg, but in the UAE, it was almost as if they had left their batting smarts behind.ESPNcricinfo LtdWhat went wrong
Like captain Rohit Sharma said before the last league game, they “didn’t bat well in the UAE leg”, and it cost them a playoff spot.Mumbai are known for their star-studded line-up, and their campaign took a beating when a number of those stopped clicking. Quinton de Kock’s strike rate dipped under 105 in the last three games he played, Rohit produced two single-digit scores when they needed to win desperately, Ishan Kishan and Suryakumar Yadav clicked a little too late, and Hardik Pandya didn’t come to the party at all. To add to that, Trent Boult, the powerplay king of IPL 2020, went wicketless in powerplays five games in a row.In the news
The one who was under scrutiny the most was Hardik, who was off the boil with the bat and didn’t bowl a single over in the tournament. He is in the squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup as an allrounder but with no overs and hardly any runs under his belt, fans and several former players have started asking about his position. When at his best, there aren’t many in India like him. But he is far from at his best right now.
Punjab Kings
Where they finished
For the second year in a row, they finished sixth on the table with 12 points. How the season went
Starting the season with a new name, Punjab Kings opened their campaign with a win but went on to lose five of their next seven games. Coming to the UAE, their struggles to string wins together continued and they ended in a complicated four-way muddle in the middle of the points table. They did win their last three games but fell out of the race because of their poor net run rate. They continued to have issues in their batting line-up, which seemed to misfire once the opening pair of KL Rahul and Mayank Agarwal was done. But on the positive side, their uncapped Indian bowlers Arshdeep Singh, Ravi Bishnoi and Harpreet Brar stood out.ESPNcricinfo LtdWhat went wrong
Their over-reliance on Rahul and Agarwal. While the two continued to be the team’s backbone, Nicholas Pooran had to be dropped after being unable to reprise his 2020 IPL form. The uncapped Indians in the middle order – Deepak Hooda, Sarfaraz Khan and Shahrukh Khan – could also not deliver enough. Their middle-order (Nos. 4-7), in fact, had the second-worst batting average (16.68) this season.Rahul was among the top three scorers in the tournament for the fourth year in a row, scoring 626 runs in 13 matches, but his strike rate was again a big talking point. He started off the 2021 season with a 50-ball 91 but went back to scoring sedately, barring two innings, against Royal Challengers Bangalore and Chennai Super Kings, where he scored a 57-ball 91* and 42-ball 98* respectively. His strike rate was just about 114 in the rest of the ten matches. His conservative approach did not always have the desired impact on the team, something he also admitted to.In the news
Chris Gayle left the Punjab Kings’ UAE set-up citing bubble fatigue. Having just arrived from the CPL bubble, the veteran star said he was looking to mentally refresh himself ahead of the T20 World Cup.
Rajasthan Royals
Where they finished
Rajasthan Royals had yet another dull season, finishing seventh with five wins in 14 games, a minor rise from the last spot the previous season. How their season went
Royals won just three out of the seven matches in the first leg and continued to be inconsistent in the UAE as well, going on to win just two out of their seven games. In the second half, nothing really went their way. They were without some of their big guns, and were weighed down by familiar shortcomings, remaining a top-heavy side. The absence of a spearhead in their bowling attack also hurt them.ESPNcricinfo LtdWhat went wrong
Royals did not get everything right in the first half of the season but Jos Buttler, Chris Morris and captain Sanju Samson made sure to step up and keep them mid-table, despite their two biggest names – Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer – being unavailable.Buttler did not make it to the second half but they got an able replacement in Evin Lewis, who along with Yashasvi Jaiswal, got them off to rapid starts. Samson, who had his best-ever outing in his nine-year IPL career, making 484 runs in 14 games, was also a force at the top of the order. But that was it. The middle order remained their weak link, and Liam Livingstone and Glenn Phillips couldn’t help much. Neither could Morris. He was also poor with the ball. Morris not only went wicketless in the first three matches in the UAE but was also expensive, leaking 47 and 50 runs against Punjab Kings and Royal Challengers Bangalore respectively, and was dropped as a result. There were a few good individual performances, from Kartik Tyagi, Chetan Sakariya and Mustafizur Rahman, in their otherwise wayward bowling attack, but the constant shuffling towards the business end of the tournament did not work well either. And, if anything, the end was terrible: 90 for 9 and 85 all out in their last two league games. In the news
Royals were without their three biggest overseas stars for varying stretches. Archer was ruled out due to an elbow injury right at the start, Stokes took a break from the game for mental-health reasons and Buttler opted out of the UAE leg because of the birth of his second child. That was too much to make up for.
Sunrisers Hyderabad
Where they finished
Sunrisers Hyderabad had the biggest fall compared to the 2020 season, going from third place to the very bottom. They finished the 2021 edition with just three wins from 14 matches. How the season went
Sunrisers just did not turn up. Even when the first leg started in India, they took as many as four matches to register their first win. They lost another three before the IPL was postponed, and then started the UAE leg with another two defeats. Only one win from their first nine games meant their season was virtually over well before it actually was.ESPNcricinfo LtdWhat went wrong
The loss of form for David Warner and the unavailability of Jonny Bairstow in the UAE leg meant their bowlers had to do the heavy lifting again, but Sunrisers’ inability to cross 150 regularly hit them hard. They started the season by squandering chases in matches they could have won. It was because of the old issue: an inexperienced and feeble middle order. And when they batted first, they crossed 135 only twice in five attempts and defended only one of those totals successfully. In the bowling too, T Natarajan’s Covid-19-enforced absence dented their plans and the high economy rate of Sandeep Sharma and Bhuvneshwar Kumar in non-swinging conditions didn’t help either. Rashid Khan was their leading wicket-taker once again and Jason Holder also inspired them in the UAE leg with his strikes, but if there’s one team that needs a complete overhaul, it’s Sunrisers. In the news
Warner, one of the most consistent batters in the IPL in the last few years but woefully out of form at the moment, not only lost his captaincy but was also dropped from Sunrisers’ plans completely after scores of 2 and 0 in the UAE leg. He was left in the team hotel for a couple of games, before being seen waving the Sunrisers flag from the stands towards the end of the league stage. The Warner-Sunrisers marriage could well be over.

Earlier Monday, the New York Post's Jon Heyman reported that Albert Pujols have broken off talks on the role as he receives interest from the Orioles and Padres for their openings.
Neither former franchise star possesses experience as a manager at the MLB level, but Pujols has found quick success as a manager in his native Dominican Republic. He's slated to manage their national team in the 2026 World Baseball Classic. Hunter joined the Angels as a special assistant to general manager Perry Minasian last year.
Who are the other candidates for the Angels' managerial vacancy?
Los Angeles could still look to a former player with Kurt Suzuki still in the mix, according to MLB.com's Rhett Bollinger. Suzuki has served as a special assistant to Minasian as well. Bollinger mentioned Rangers special assistant Nick Hundley, Cubs bench coach Ryan Flaherty, former Orioles manager Brandon Hyde as well as former Twins skipper Rocco Baldelli as additional candidates linked to the Angels.
The Angels finished last season 72-90 and missed out on the playoffs for the 11th season in a row.
